Clay Tiles for Mirrors Workshop – John McNulty

August 3 – 5, 9 am to 12 Noon Each Day (3-day class)

Participants will use a variety of techniques, including molds, bas-relief, and other texturing methods to make tiles for use with mirrors.

COST: $150 (15% discount for guests of Bear Mountain Lodge), Materials Included.

Mundos Pot Fundamentals of Mata Ortiz Pottery – Edmundo Lopez & Luz Elva

August 3 & 4, 10 am to 3 pm Each Day (2-day class)

Learn the secrets of forming and firing pots in the ancient style of Paquime: building the pot up from the clay, painting and polishing, and natural firing. Participants will each create a pot of their own.

COST: $150, Materials Included. LIMIT: 10 Participants

Relief Tile & Mold Workshop – Stephani Stephenson

August 3 & 4, 10 am to 4 pm Each Day (2-day class)

This combination demonstration, instruction, and hands-on workshop will focus on the art of modeling and sculpting a relief tile in clay, then casting it in plaster. Each participant will design and make a 4″ relief tile and plaster mold.

Create a ‘Found’ Objet d’Art SculptureJean-Robert P. Be’ffort

August 3 & 4, 10 am to 12 Noon Each Day (2-day class)

Ages 10 to 16. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own found or recycled object to mosaic. (Think interesting shapes of wood, bottles or a rock–but not too big.) A variety of items will be provided to mosaic the sculpture, such as: glass globs, marbles, stained glass, bottle caps, and ceramic chips and shards. How cool is this?

COST: $50, Materials Included (except ‘found’ object). LIMIT: 8 Participants

Sculpt a Ceramic Ocarina (Ancient Flute-like Instrument) – Zoe Wolfe

August 3, 9 am to 12 Noon

Fun for ages 10 to 100! Make a ceramic sculpture that either toots or plays scales. Model each one uniquely, use slip/glazes to decorate, and Zoe will fire them.

COST: $45, Materials Included. LIMIT: 12 Participants

Zoe Wolfe Get Down… with Clay! – Zoe Wolfe

August 3, 2 pm to 5 pm

Dig into clay without restraint. Working solo and in collaboration, construct both small and large unexpected forms. Guaranteed: laughter and freedom in new approaches to art making.

Nancy Pawlowski Recreate Silver City History: 3D Fun with Clay!Nancy Pawlowski

August 3, 5:30 to 7:30 pm

Kids, ages 9 and up. Have fun hand building with clay, while discovering Silver City’s historic treasures. Sculpt in 3D clay a 100 year old landmark that you may see every day, and see Silver City in a whole new way. Projects will not be fired, but the process will be fun!

Surface! Think beyond the GlazeZoe Wolfe

August 4, 9 am to 12 Noon

Learn to add foreign elements, texture with diverse materials, and color with other clay bodies to enrich your ceramic surfaces. Time will be given for artistic exploration.

Pinch Pots: Enclosed & BeyondZoe Wolfe

August 4, 2 pm to 5 pm

The enclosed pinch pot becomes a time capsule, an animal, or an organic form. Learn tricks to applying similar concepts in working on mid-sized and large exterior organic forms that remain hollow.

Intensive Tile Making WorkshopKate Brown

August 8, 9 am to 5 pm – Post-Festival Workshop

Participants will begin with a 16″ x 20″ wet terra cotta clay slab, which they will then cut into tiles – the size and shape of their own determination – and decorate with colored clay slips. This workshop has become a Silver City area tradition over the past 15 years, and the homes of many local folks are graced with tile projects from the workshop.
